BEAR Scotland has announced a programme of road surface improvement works for the A87 west of Loch Cluanie, set to get underway on Tuesday 3 May at 8pm.
The project will see two locations, measuring a total of 1.2km, resurfaced on the A87 between Cluanie Inn and Shiel, creating a smoother and safer road for motorists.
The improvements are scheduled to take up to seven nights to complete. The project will take place between 8pm and 6am each day from Tuesday 3 May, with surfacing due to be completed by 6am on Thursday 12 May subject to weather conditions. No works are planned for Friday or Saturday night.
Due to the narrow carriageway widths on the A87, and to ensure the safety of road workers and motorists, the works will be undertaken using a full road closure. Amnesty periods will be provided at 9pm, 10pm, 12am, 2am and 4am to allow vehicles to be escorted through the site safely under a 10mph convoy. The road will be open outwith working hours to keep disruption to a minimum, but a speed restriction of 30mph will remain in place as traffic will be running over a temporary surface.
Access through the works site for emergency services will be maintained at all times.
Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative said: "This surfacing project across two locations on the A87 will help address defects and greatly improve the surface for motorists.
"The planned overnight closures are essential to completing the works safely given the narrow widths of the road. We’ve taken steps to limit the overall impact of the project as best we can, undertaking works overnight and avoiding Friday and Saturday nights.
"Our teams will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as they can, and we thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance. We encourage road users to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date travel information."
