BEAR Scotland has announced the successful completion of surfacing trials on the A90 southbound carriageway on the Brechin Bypass.

The trial involved teams conducting repairs to the concrete carriageway across 1.2km of the A90 using a hydro-demolition method to break out numerous deteriorated areas of concrete, which was then reinstated using a specialist concrete mix. Following the concrete repair work, the surface was then blasted with a steel shot to clean and re-texture the concrete surface, prior to the application of the new road surface overlay.

The asphalt overlay includes a number of different pavement reinforcement products to determine if any benefit can be derived from the use of such interlayers to both reduce strain in the new asphalt material, and to protect the underlying concrete.

If the trial proves to be successful, this repair and overlay technique can be replicated on other areas of the A90 Brechin Bypass, greatly improving this section of the network.
