Skills Replenishment Key To Successful Future - Arc-Tech

Skills replenishment has been key to securing the future for Glasgow's Arc-Tech (Scotland), with in-house training programmes continuing to flourish.

The Glasgow-based Building Services contractor provides Mechanical, Electrical and Renewable service packages to support industrial, commercial, education, care and residential projects across the breadth of the country.

Working with some of the industry's largest construction companies, the business has grown to generate a turnover in excess of £19m per year in just five years and is supported by a 120-strong workforce.

Arc-Tech (Scotland) Commercial Director, Alastair Graham, said: "Arc-Tech understands the value of people and we will always seek to bring the very best minds to our business. Our recruitment strategy since our inception in 2016 is a testament to this approach and as a result, we are now one of the leading companies of our kind in the country.

"With that said, we acknowledge that if we are to sustain our growth, youth training and skills development is as equally important. Arc-Tech currently employs 23 trade apprentices, 8 of which joined us this year, and 3 technical trainees whilst 34% of our staff are under the age of 28. For us, this is a key statistic when you consider the challenges facing our industry as a result of an ageing workforce."

Peter Dunlop is a recent example of Arc-Tech's approach to youth training and development. The 22 year old is one of three apprentice graduates that have been retained by the business this year and he has since gone on to accept a new role as Assistant Project Surveyor as part of an HNC in Quantity Surveying.

Peter said: "I am delighted to not only be employed by Arc-Tech full-time but to also start afresh with this new role in quantity surveying. My four years on the tools were a fantastic learning experience and I would thoroughly recommend an apprenticeship to any young person who is looking towards a career in construction or building services. I am without doubt that the skills I have learned will help me on my journey and with Arc-Tech's hugely experienced management team and Board of Directors, I will be given help that will be invaluable to my development."

Alastair Graham concluded: "Peter has seamlessly integrated into our team at Arc-Tech HQ; his application as an apprentice was excellent and it is clear he will carry on this positive attitude as he journeys to become a quantity surveyor over the next three years.

"For Peter, he is learning skills that will give him a career for life whilst Arc-Tech can give him the tools to progress both personally and professionally. His development alongside all of our trainees and apprentices are wonderful examples to young people who may be searching for their dream job. It is an exciting time to become part of our industry."
