Traveller sites developed by South Ayrshire Council at Coalpots Road in Girvan have been named the Affordable Housing Development of the Year at the Scottish Home Awards.

Completed in August 2019 at a cost of £1.6 million, the housing which was part funded by the Council and Scottish Government, replaced the former Houdston travellers site in Girvan, which was damaged by flooding.

The layout reflects the uniqueness of the site, with a secure parking zone for caravans and a central communal area for the families.

Welcoming news of the award, Councillor Philip Saxton, Housing and Community Wellbeing Portfolio Holder said: "I am delighted with this award, it highlights the extraordinary effort that went in to ensuring the housing met the needs of the travellers and the rest of the town.

"The end result is modern, energy efficient and accessible housing in close proximity to schools, public transport, health and other services.

"We will continue to work with our partners to develop affordable housing, ensuring people across South Ayrshire can grow well, live well and age well."
