Glasgow Chosen As Potential Host Of UN 2020 Climate Summit

Construction News Image
SSE has welcomed the news that Glasgow has been selected as the host city for the UK's bid to host the United Nation's 2020 climate change summit.

Next year's UN conference is considered the most important gathering on climate change since the Paris Agreement, or COP21 as it is known, was adopted in 2015.

Should the UK bid for COP26 be successful, an expected 30,000 delegates will attend the global event to be hosted by the end of next year at venues in Glasgow's Scottish Events Campus (SEC), including The SSE Hydro. Glasgow was chosen as the potential host city by Claire Perry, the UK-nominated president for Conference of the Parties 26, or COP26.

SSE Chief Executive Alistair Phillips-Davies said: "Scotland is very much at the heart of the UK's transition to a net zero future, leading the drive towards investment in new renewable energy and the networks that take it round the country. But we cannot be complacent and much more hard work needs to be done.

"By hosting the world's leaders in Glasgow next year for COP26, the UK and Scotland can continue to play their leadership role in driving the actions needed to combat climate change. As a company headquartered in Scotland, we are committed at SSE to helping the UK achieve net zero, make a success of COP26, and we will continue to power that drive towards a global clean energy revolution."
