Morgan Sindall Appointed To Build Two New Schools

Construction News Image
Morgan Sindall has been appointed to construct two new educational campuses by South Ayrshire Council and the hub South West.

With Architects BDP appointed to lead the design team, Morgan Sindall will build both the Prestwick Educational Campus and Maybole Community Campus.

Just over £64 million in total will be spent on the projects to create first class learning and teaching environments for children, young people and staff as well as a number of facilities that will be accessible to the wider community.

The appointment of the contractor means work on the Prestwick campus should start in the summer of 2020 with completion by the end of 2022. The campus to be built on the site of the existing Glenburn Primary School will have capacity for up to 823 children and will replace Glenburn and St Ninian's Primary; there will also be an Early Years Centre.

Work on the Maybole Community Campus should get underway next summer with completion in the spring of 2023. The new campus which will be built on the site of the existing Carrick Academy will have capacity for up to 1,370 children and young people.

As well as a new secondary school, the campus serving Maybole and Carrick will bring together Cairn and Gardenrose primary schools and their Early Years Centres and there will be a new St Cuthbert's Primary.

Both early years centres will help South Ayrshire Council achieve the Scottish Government target of doubling early year's childcare to 1140 hours per child by 2020.

Once the campuses are complete, pupils of all ages will benefit from state-of-the-art learning environments, interactive play areas and first class sporting facilities. The Maybole campus will also feature a swimming pool which will be accessible to the public.

Councillor Peter Henderson, Resources and Performance Portfolio Holder for South Ayrshire Council said: "This is an exciting development and an important milestone for South Ayrshire Council, as we continue to transform learning for our children and young people.

"The campus-style approach will work really well in both Maybole and Prestwick, being at the same location means the schools will all have access to high quality internal and external facilities.

"Giving children and young people the best learning experience possible is a key ambition and these new campuses will have facilities which will inspire learners for many decades to come."

The next steps will involve engaging with stakeholders to help develop designs for each campus which the Council will publicise in due course.
