New Gaelic Medium School Opens In Portree

A new Gaelic Medium School has been officially opened in Portree, becoming the third school of its kind in Highland.

Bun-Sgoil Ghàidhlig Phort Rìgh opened yesterday, 03 September, and has 133 Primary Pupils and 47 in the Nursery, with further plans to expand.

The new development is part of The Highland Council's Gaelic Language Plan.

Deputy First Minister, John Swinney, said: "It is a pleasure to be involved in supporting Highland Council to realise their vision for the Gaelic Language.

"We are seeing growing demand from parents for access to Gaelic Medium education across the country which clearly demonstrates that the Scottish Government's commitments to supporting the language are a having a positive result.

"I commend Highland Council for their actions and look forward to working with them on future projects."

Frank Reid, Managing Director, Robertson Northern added: "The new Gaelic Medium School will play a pivotal role in Gaelic Medium Education and Robertson is proud to have had the opportunity to play a part in that. The school has already been warmly welcomed by locals, which we believe is because it celebrates the vibrant heritage of Skye and the West Highland community.

"While our work at Bun-Sgoil Ghàidhlig Phort Rìgh is now complete, we are pleased to say that we continue to work with Highland Council on other important projects including Merkinch Primary and Family Centre in Inverness, with the project procured through the Scape Major Works – Scotland framework, part of the National Construction framework."
