Robertson Group has started work to build a new £55 million community campus in Inverurie.
The new three-storey facility will be built at the current Inverurie Academy site and construction officially got underway on Friday, 11 May.
Once finished in 2021, the new campus will house Inverurie Academy, St Andrew's Primary and community sports facilities which will include outdoor and indoor pitches, a six lane swimming pool and a health centre. Other features include a multi-use games area, two all-weather pitches and an amphitheatre. A garden and pathways for walkers and cyclists to explore will also be developed.
Speaking after taking part in the traditional 'sod cutting' ceremony, Aberdeenshire Provost Cllr Bill Howatson said: "I am delighted that the building work which will see a fantastic new community campus in Inverurie is now underway. Generations of school children will now use this state-of-the-art complex. There are also indoor and outdoor sports facilities which make this a real community building which I hope will be enjoyed by all.
"This multi-million-pound project is one of the biggest school construction projects currently taking place in Scotland. Once complete the new campus will have capacity to accommodate 1,600 pupils at Inverurie Academy and 100 pupils at the brand-new St Andrew's School."
Cllr Gillian Owen said: "It is brilliant news that construction has started on this new community campus. We have built a number of modern schools and made improvements to existing schools over the last few years. This is the latest example of our commitment to providing the best possible facilities so that our young people can thrive."
Robertson Group's Chief Executive Officer, Derek Shewan, said: "Robertson is proud to be delivering the new Inverurie Community Campus, working alongside our partners at Aberdeenshire Council and hub North Scotland. This exciting project is another milestone for Robertson, in the delivery of quality education buildings throughout the North East, providing enhanced facilities for both students and the wider community."
