Design consultants GL Hearn have been appointed to draw up a plan outlining the future vision of Scalloway on the west central mainland of Shetland.

The Edinburgh-based company will work with the local community as part of the Making Places Initiative to create a pilot 'Local Place Plan' that contains priorities and actions for the village.

In addition, GL Hearn will work with urban designers Iglu Studio to lead a number of engagement events in the coming months, to gather views from a wide cross section of the community on improvements in the village.

Alastair Cooper, Chair of Shetland Islands Council's Development Committee, said: "I'm pleased that we've been able to appoint GL Hearn and Iglu Studio to this design project. We're keen to ensure that the Scalloway community leads the planning for their future and these experienced design professionals will help them to do that.

"The result will also be a 'Local Place Plan' and vision that the Council can use to help us with our own future planning for the area."

The first engagement events with community residents will take place in April with follow up events in June.
