New £5.3m Community Hub Opens In Barrhead

Construction News Image
A new £5.3 million community hub has officially opened in Barrhead, East Renfrewshire.

The Sir Harry Burns Centre contains a number of services under one roof, including early learning and childcare.

Located on the site of the former Auchenback Primary, the facility has been named in honour of Scotland's former Chief Medical Officer, Sir Harry Burns.

Speaking at the opening ceremony on Tuesday, Sir Harry said: "For many years I've been absolutely convinced about the importance of a nurturing environment in ensuring success for young people. As someone who was born in Barrhead, and lived most of my life here, I'm extremely humbled and moved by the decision to name this centre after me and I look forward to supporting it in the years ahead."

Council Leader Tony Buchanan said: "Working with children and families from a very early age, in the one centre, has a host of benefits to children's development. As well has having the nursery facility, as the building develops it will also bring together front-line staff from other council services and partner organisations, such as health visitors and social workers.

"This will provide the opportunity for staff to work with parents while their child is learning and cared for. I'm delighted that this wonderful community hub is now up-and-running and look forward to seeing how it develops in the coming months and years."
