Work is to begin on a £640,000 bridge repair and strengthening programme in the Scottish Borders.

The historic Lowood Bridge between Galashiels and Melrose is to be improved after a structural inspection identified a number of areas that need repaired.

Works will include;

• Rebuilding the bridge parapet walls

• Installing steel anchors into the bridge

• Scour protection works on the central pier

• Fixing other masonry defects on the main part of bridge structure

The 20-week scheme will commence on Wednesday, 31 January with completion scheduled for June 2018. During the works, the structure will be closed and diversions will be put in place.

Cllr Gordon Edgar said: "We appreciate the closure of Lowood Bridge will have a significant impact but once these essential works are completed, weight restrictions will be removed and the bridge can once again be used by all vehicles and pedestrians.

"We would ask local people and commuters to give themselves a bit extra time for their journeys during the repair and strengthening works to the bridge, which will ensure this vital transport link can be used for many years to come."
