SP Energy Networks is continuing work on a £100 million electricity network upgrade project in Glasgow.

With work on the first phase now complete, the firm is on schedule to complete the investment programme by 2023.

A total of £10m was invested in the city in 2017, with a further £12m planned for 2018. Overall, the funding will benefit around 427,000 customers in the city of Glasgow, Coulport, Helensburgh, Balloch, Dumbarton, Blanefield and Cambuslang.

Elsewhere, a £3m upgrade of the Port Dundas substation saw the facility fitted with the latest technology to improve reliability of electricity supply for 29,000 local homes and businesses. In addition, 500 new homes and 6,000 square metres of commercial space being developed in Port Dundas, as part of Glasgow's City Deal, can now be integrated into the existing electricity network.

Work is now underway to replace 60 substations in Govan and Partick, as part of a £10m upgrade to modernise infrastructure originally used by heavy industry and shipbuilding. The investment will give the areas additional capacity for commercial and housing growth, as well as linking with the new Glasgow University Technology Campus and planned commercial development in Tradeston.

Future upgrades are also planned for Charlotte Street (in the Gallowgate) and Killermont substations. Over £4m will be spent replacing major pieces of equipment, helping to improve the reliability of the local electricity network.

The first phase of activity has gone as planned and work is already underway on the second phase of the £100 million investment."
