Work is to begin on a £2.8 million waste water infrastructure upgrade project in Greenock, Inverclyde.
Scottish Water's alliance partner, Amey Black & Veatch, will start installing 47-metres of new pipework in the town centre from Friday, 12 January.
The project will see the existing sewer network upgraded to improve the water flow and reduce the risk of flooding in the Oak Mall Shopping Centre and surrounding areas.
From Friday, 12 January until the end of March, the Bullring Car Park will be temporarily closed. The car park will be closed for around ten weeks to allow the first phase of work to be completed.
A further temporary road closure will also be necessary from 4am – 8am on on Sunday, 14 January. This will allow specialist machinery to be delivered for the site. Diversions will be in place.
Scottish Water Corporate Affairs Regional Manager, Ruaridh MacGregor, said: "We're delighted to be starting this vital piece of work to alleviate flooding in and around one of Inverclyde's key shopping destinations.
"The project will benefit retailers and shoppers alike and will help minimise the risk of disruption in the future. Whether in a domestic or business setting, we're acutely aware of the inconvenience that flooding causes and we welcome the benefits that this work will bring to Greenock town centre."
Cllr Michael McCormick added: "This work by Scottish Water is very welcome news. This investment to improve the infrastructure will help to tackle the ongoing issues which have been faced by the Oak Mall and reduce the risk of flooding."
