Land Engineering has started work to transform Charlotte Street in Kirkcaldy, Fife.
The contractor will carry out improvements to the road as part of a £1 million town centre fund for Kirkcaldy.
The project, which is set to be completed before Christmas, will see a direct link created for commuters to the waterfront.
The scheme had previously been delayed after Land Engineering told the council in summer it was running short of materials needed to complete the job.
The council's Service Manager Mark Dewar said: "The decision to award this work to Land Engineering has not been taken lightly following the issues we experienced during the High St works. However there have been significant improvements over the last weeks and work can begin immediately rather than have more disruption for people after Christmas.
Cllr Neil Crooks added: "This is the last of the big projects funded from our £1million town centre fund for Kirkcaldy. We need to make the two multi-storey car parks more obvious to visitors and opening up Charlotte Street should guarantee better exposure."
