Third Runway At Heathrow To Benefit Scotland - Ahmad

A third runway at Heathrow Airport would provide "new opportunities" for Scotland, according to UK Aviation Minister Lord Ahmad.

Speaking at Glasgow Airport last week, the Minister said the £18.6 billion infrastructure scheme would "open capacity, introduce new routes and more flights".

It is predicted around 980,000 extra passengers could fly from Scotland to Heathrow in 2040, as well as linking Scottish businesses to expanding global markets.

In addition, £200 million of Scottish construction-related spend would be generated during planning and construction phases, while investigations will take place to discuss the potential of developing Glasgow Prestwick Airport as a potential site for a logistics hub which will support the project.

Lord Ahmad said: "Heathrow expansion is not just for London and the south of England, it would bring great benefits to the whole of the UK and shows we are open for business."

Work on the scheme is to begin in 2020 or 2021, with completion scheduled by 2025.
