Funding For Next Phase Of Govan Regeneration Approved

Glasgow City Council has approved funding to proceed with the next stage of a regeneration scheme in Govan.

The Govan Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) project aims to improve the conditions and attractiveness of the region's built historic environment, as well as encouraging better opportunities.

Funding for the second phase of the development has now been approved, which will bring an estimated £6.8 million to the local area.

The decision follows a recent Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant of £1.7 million from its Townscape Heritage Programme and £1 million from Historic Environment Scotland's Conservation Area Renewal Scheme.

The funding will be matched with £1.3m from the council, along with property owners' contributions.

The second phase will be carried out over the next five years. Specific targets include:

• Six listed buildings repaired

• 1,400 square metres of vacant historic floorspace returned to productive use

• Seven tenements and 45 shops repaired and improved

• Heritage features restored

• One public space improved at Govan Cross

• 260 people develop new skills and/or employment opportunities

• 1,350 people directly engaged in heritage themed learning projects

Council Leader Frank McAveety said: "I am delighted to see the next steps in the regeneration of Govan being taken. We are very grateful for the support of our funding partners Historic Environment Scotland and the Heritage Lottery Fund. This support will allow us to work with partner organisations in Govan to use the area's fantastic cultural and industrial heritage to continue and complete the regeneration the area has seen in recent years. With City Deal funding also coming to help transform the area, the future is bright for Govan."
