Amey has been selected to design the next phase of the £24 million A90 Laurencekirk Junction upgrade project.
The infrastructure support specialist will undertake route option assessment work and design work will be led by teams based in Scotland.
The company will develop a preferred junction option, which will eventually lead to the preparation of draft road Orders.
Transport Minister Humza Yousaf said: "We are committed to completing this important upgrade as soon as possible and the appointment of design consultants means we are now stepping up the work to deliver this much-needed scheme for the people of the north east as soon as possible."
