Work is underway to carry out maintenance repairs on a historic bridge in Edinburgh.

A recent inspection of the Grade A-listed North Bridge discovered sections of the decorative facade panels were in a poor condition.

A specialist contractor has now been appointed to carry out remedial repairs on the structure, which are expected to last three weeks.

Works will include more detailed inspections of the bridge as well as wrapping a decorative facade of the south span of North Bridge. In addition, a netting system will be fitted to the structures underside to allow access for ongoing engineering inspections. It is expected both lanes under the bridge will be required to close for certain periods to allow the netting system to be installed.

Transport Convener Councillor Lesley Hinds said: "With recent routine inspection work showing parts of North Bridge's decorative facade in poor condition, it's important that we get this remedial work under way."
