Construction Union Welcomes New Council Homes In North Lanarkshire

Construction union UCATT has welcomed the announcement that North Lanarkshire Council is to invest £160 million to build 1,800 new council houses.

With 12,000 on the waiting list in the area, and around 170,000 across Scotland, the need for a radical programme of council housebuilding is paramount to improve the social and economic conditions in Scotland's towns and cities.

The new houses are to be completed by 2026.

Regional Secretary Steve Dillon said: "UCATT welcomes the decision of North Lanarkshire Council to go ahead with the building of much needed council homes in the area. UCATT looks forward to working with the council to ensure that skilled jobs and apprenticeship opportunities are delivered as a legacy of the economic investment.

"We will now be in touch with the Council to look at delivering a construction industry charter to safeguard employment rights and entitlements of the workforce engaged on these jobs."
