Midlothian Council has announced the closure of Melville Road, Dalkeith, for up to a month to allow repair works to be carried out on Elginhaugh.
The council said repair work is needed following an incident on the bridge during which the parapet was hit and ended up in the river.
The council's roads team anticipate the road will be closed to vehicles for up to four weeks. A diversion will remain in place via the A6094/A7/B6392 for the duration of the works.
This week, two cranes will start retrieving the stone work from the river bed and from on and around the Scottish Water pipe bridge. This will allow Scottish Water the chance to assess damage and consider appropriate repairs.
Scaffolding will be put in place to allow for the bridge parapet to be rebuilt.
