Council Approves Development Plans For South Cumbernauld

North Lanarkshire Council has approved plans for the future development of the South Cumbernauld Community Growth Area (CGA).

The ten-year Finalised Strategic Development Framework sets out how the region could be developed with housing, community facilities and infrastructure.

Issues raised through two public consultations in March and May included education provision; capacity of the road network; requirement for more 'affordable' housing, visual impact of future developments and the use of local underpasses.

Developer applications for two sites within the CGA, Palacerigg and Mid Forest, will now be assessed.

Cllr James Coyle said: "South Cumbernauld was identified in 2006 as a potential location for up to 2,000 new homes and community facilities by 2025 to meet local demand.

"We want to make sure that any development of that scale is designed and delivered effectively, with the necessary infrastructure, like schools, transport and shops, in place."
