Work is underway to develop a £1 million cycle route in South Lanarkshire.

It is understood a traffic-free dedicated cycle path spanning Glasgow and Gretna will be built from Lesmahagow to Happendon.

The project will help complete route 74 of the National Cycle Framework.

Funding for the scheme was secured from Sustrans Scotland, Strathclyde Partnership for Transport and Transport Scotland.

The route was designed and will be delivered by the local authority.

Gordon MacKay, Head of the council Roads and Transportation, said: "These works are necessary to continue the development of cycle networks within, as well as through, South Lanarkshire."

Lane closures and contraflow management will be in place on the B7078 between Lesmahagow and Happendon until the end of March.

This will allow the north-bound carriageway to be converted to two way traffic, following which the current south-bound carriageway will become the cycle path.

Work will also involve alterations to junctions at Balgray Road and at junction 11 of the M74.

In addition, signage and road markings along the route will be altered.
