Angus Council is to consider proposals on creating a new housing model for older people, it has been announced.

The plans involve reducing the local authority's sheltered housing provision by a third and converting them into homes for elderly people.

If approved, around 210 of the council's 626 sheltered housing units would be transformed into retirement accommodation.

Changes would be phased in as tenancies change and none of the current tenants would be required to move.

Council Leader Iain Gaul said the changes were being proposed to make sure housing provision for older people was fit for purpose, affordable and sustainable.

He said: "The recommendations being put forward reflect both the feedback we've received and the need to develop a more sustainable and affordable model of housing for older people.

"We remain committed to ensuring that tenants care and support needs are met, but we must also comply with the requirements of Self Directed Support."

The report will be considered by the Social Work & Health and Communities committees on 12 January and 19 January.
