A new modern sheltered housing complex has been opened in North Ayrshire.

The £3.3 million Vennel Gardens development is located in the centre of Irvine.

It comprises of 16 one-bedroom homes and a number of communal areas including two resident lounges, a kitchen, a dining area, a guest bedroom and landscaped courtyards.

In addition, a 'Community Hub' has been established which will host a variation of activities.

The complex was designed by council architects who consulted with the University of Stirling's 'Dementia Service Design Centre' to ensure the complex was designed in a dementia friendly manner.

The project also provided ten apprenticeship roles for young people, including joinery, brick laying, plumbing, electrical work and painting.

Provost Joan Sturgeon unveiled a plaque to mark the centres opening on Thursday, 26 November.

She said: "I was absolutely delighted to be able to mark the official opening of Vennel Gardens. It is a fantastic development which will bring huge benefit to its residents as well as older people within the Irvine community."
