New £474,000 West Lothian Cycle And Pedestrian Link Opens

Construction News Image
A £474,000 cycle and pedestrian link has been opened in West Lothian.

The new route runs along the A779 between Starlaw and Bogall and completes a link between the communities of Bathgate and Livingston.

An additional 1km of shared off road use for cyclists and pedestrians is also provided.

Low powered LED street lighting LED lamps have been installed along the full length of the route to reduce carbon emissions and lower energy costs.

The project was funded by both the council and Sustrans.

Council Leader John McGinty said: "The new path fills a missing link in the active travel network in this part of West Lothian. It will support anyone wishing to travel actively to employment locations on the A89, Bathgate, Starlaw and Kirkton areas in particular.

"We are delighted to work with Sustrans through the Community Links programme to continue to provide high-quality active travel infrastructure across West Lothian, and support active travel for everyday journeys in line with our Draft Active Travel Plan."

Tom Bishop, Community Links Manager at Sustrans, added: "Sustrans is delighted to have been able to work with West Lothian Council to deliver this great project through our Community Links Programme - using Transport Scotland funding. The Community Links programme provides funding for the creation of cycling infrastructure for everyday journeys.

"The installation of these new cycling facilities will give people the opportunity to cycle, walk or scoot on a regular basis."
