A council consultation on plans for an Edinburgh cycle route which would link the east to the west of the city is due to begin, it has been announced.

Plans for the cycleway between Roseburn and Leith Walk are to be debated by councillors on 27 October.

If approved, the proposals for the route – which runs through the city centre via George Street – will be put to the public for feedback.

The cycleway includes sections of segregated lanes on main streets, and would plug a gap in the cycle network and link to the city's off-road paths.

Councillor Lesley Hinds said: "This route is key to our commitment to ensure safe and easy cycling across the city, and will provide an essential link to our extensive network of routes."

Work is underway to investigate funding options for the scheme, which would tie into several other major projects including Leith Walk improvements, the remodelling of Picardy Place and George Street public realm enhancement.
