Scottish First Minister (SFM) Nicola Sturgeon has announced six new elective treatment centres are to be created across Scotland.
Over £200 million will be invested in the new facilities ahead of them becoming operational.
The centres will allow people to be treated more quickly for planned surgery, while also helping the NHS meet increasing demand for the elderly population.
The facilities will carry out procedures such as hip, knees and cataract treatments.
Work is now underway on securing sites in Lothian, Grampian, Tayside and Highland heath boards to allow for new stand-alone facilities to be created.
The Golden Jubilee Hospital in Clydebank is also to be expanded to include a new centre.
