Plans to develop a new care facility have been agreed by Orkney Islands Council.

The new facility will be developed in Kirkwall to replace St Rognvald House.

A project to extend and refurbish St Rognvald's had already been under development.

Caroline Sinclair, Chief Officer for Health and Social Care, said: "As the design work to extend and refurbish St Rognvald House has progressed, it has become increasingly clear that a range of challenges would need to be overcome in converting and adding to an older facility – not least the disruption the work would cause for people living at St Rognvald's and our staff."

The new care facility is due to be completed and operational by the summer of 2019.
