Transport Minister Derek Mackay has opened a new £2.5m footbridge in Glasgow.

Scotland TranServ carried out the project on behalf of Transport Scotland.

The new Hillington footbridge on the M8 replaced the previous structure following a bridge strike.

The 207ft bridge was lifted into its final position last weekend and provides a link between the Hillington and Renfrew communities.

Two 337ft ramps provide access for cyclists and less-abled users.

In addition, 16 LED lights span the bridge which are environmentally friendly and are expected to last up to 20 years.

The deck of the structure has also been lined with anti-slip waterproof coating.

Transport Minister Derek Mackay, said: "It is great to see the new Hillington footbridge open for business and ready to be used by the Renfrew and Hillington communities.

"The two and a half million pound investment by Transport Scotland has resulted in an impressive new structure that will provide a safe crossing point for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users for years to come."

Gordon Wilson, contract director for Scotland TranServ, added: "“The new footbridge marks a radical transformation to the landscape at Hillington and its surrounding areas, benefiting the local communities for years to come."
