Highland Council leader Margaret Davidson has welcomed the beginning of the £3bn A9 dualling works.
The project was formally launched by Infrastructure Secretary Keith Brown on 10 September.
The first phase of work is the five-mile long section between Kincraig and Dalraddy which is due to be completed by summer 2017.
Councillor Davidson said: "We've campaigned for many years to see the A9 dualled and so I very much welcome the commencement of this work. This is a good start but we need to ensure the remaining stretches are completed as quickly as possible."
