A Glasgow-based school which supports children with special needs has received a funding boost to expand its facilities.

Maryhill's East Park additional needs school received £513,906 thanks to the Big Lottery Fund, which overall granted £1.5m to various projects.

The school is now one step closer to creating a new £3m development of four single classrooms, for children who need one-to-one teaching, a respite centre, accommodation for four young people and an outdoor classroom.

East Park's Executive Director, Judy Cromarty, said: "We are absolutely thrilled to have the backing of the Big Lottery Fund for our 'Strategies for Life Project'. The project is due for completion by August 2016 when we will welcome the children who will benefit from the new service."

The two other projects which will benefit from the Big Lottery Fund are:

• Glasgow City Council's 'Connect 2 project' (£540,800) - an employment, education and training programme for 16 to 19 year olds in Glasgow.

• St. George's and St. Peter's Community Association's 'Daffodil Club' (£540,321) - supporting older people in Easterhouse.
