Restoration Works Progressing At Mine

East Ayrshire Council has announced restoration works are continuing at the Dunstonhill surface mine near Patna.

Originally operated by Scottish Coal, the former open cast mine was left unrestored following the company's liquidation.

A team of 26 workers are now progressing works at the 330 hectare site.

The Dunstonhill restoration project is costing £3 million and will be delivered over 12 months by UK surface mine restoration company Hargreaves, working in conjunction with the council and Mine Restoration Limited.

Council Leader Douglas Reid and Council Chief Executive Fiona Lees met with Corri Wilson MP to view progress at the project site.

Councillor Reid said: "I'm delighted so much progress is visible so soon, with the infrastructure for new access routes and paths already taking shape, which once completed will make it easier for walkers, cyclists and visitors to enjoy the local countryside and the stunning views of Ayrshire.

"In addition to improving the safety, access and visual amenity of the area, the restoration will also include the historically significant Lethanhill and improve access to the war memorial there."
