Orkney Council has agreed to proceed with proposals to enhance the Broad Street area of Kirkwall.

A council meeting today 9 July voted in favour of adopting a 'masterplan' of the projects to be undertaken.

Gillespies, the design team appointed by the Council, presented proposals and design options at the start of a week-long public exhibition in June, attracting approximately 1200 people.

At today's meeting, the Council agreed to implement the first phase of the proposals, which focuses on Broad Street.

A Project Board made up of eight Councillors will oversee the implementation of the work, set to get underway later this year.

The Project Boards responsibilities include:

• Final design details including road, parking and pavement alignments.

• The detailed arrangement of public spaces and the choice of street furniture and lighting.

• The priority given to the enhancement options.

• The final choice of materials to be used.

Council Convener Steven Heddle said: "The masterplan provides the broad detail of the enhancements planned for Broad Street, which have been developed following extensive consultation with the public and stakeholders."
