Pendrich Appointed To Paint Orkney Beacon

Pendrich Height Services has been appointed to paint the 21ft Nevi Skerry Beacon in Orkney.

The beacon is situated in Scapa Flow and will require scaffolding to be erected.

It is used to warn ships of the skerry and must be clearly painted black with a red stripe to act as a marker during daylight hours.

Brian Archibald, the council Head of Marine Services, Engineering and Transportation, said: "As a harbour authority Orkney Islands Council has an obligation to maintain all navigational marks. This work is usually carried out on contract by the Northern Lighthouse Board but in the case of the Nevi Skerry beacon it falls to us."

Mr Archibald added the last time the beacon was painted was 20 years ago.

He said: "It’s a complicated and challenging job.

"The beacon stands at around 21ft and is of cast iron construction and will require special preparation.

"It’s in a fairly inaccessible location and will therefore require a suitable vessel for transport and standby duty."

Stewart Thomson from Pendrich Height Services said: "Pendrich Height Services are delighted to have been chosen to carry out these works and look forward to the challenging aspects of this project, we also look forward to working with and on behalf of Orkney Islands Council to ensure a safe and quality conclusion."
