A former Barony Colliery in Auchinleck, East Ayrshire, is to be redeveloped.
Improvement works are due to start at the historical Barony A Frame, East Ayrshire Council confirmed.
Upgrades included extending the car park, and creating additional footpaths and cycle ways.
The project is jointly funded by the Big Lottery Community Spaces Fund and the Minerals Trust. The Trust will work along with schools, local artists and East Ayrshire Council to create a range of learning opportunities, artwork and interpretation for the landmark.
Councillor Barney Menzies, Chair of the Baron A Frame Trust, said: "We want to encourage families and children to use the site, to be more active, get our into the countryside and hopefully, learn a little about the social history of the area.
"Lots of people don’t know anything about the coal industry and what the Barony was like, we hope that by improving the facilities onsite more people will come out and learn about mining and local heritage."
