Kelvingrove Gates Restored In £147k Project

£147,000 restoration work has given the historic Jubilee Gates in Glasgow's Kelvingrove Park a new lease of life after decades in storage.

The wrought-iron gates were manufactured in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee. The gates, now situated at the Derby Street entrance, were eventually removed for safe keeping.

They have now been reinstated with repairs to the damaged intricate metal detail, which includes the City's Coat of Arms.

Six sandstone columns have been reconstructed to support the gates.

Skilled glass craftsmen worked to recreate the lanterns based on photographs of the original design.

Councillor Alistair Watson, Glasgow City Council's Executive Member for Sustainability and Transport, said: "I'm delighted that we have been able to have these magnificent gates returned to their full Victorian splendour. Our parks are at the centre of the city's cultural heritage and we are committed to their upkeep.

"The restoration will allow the distinctive and historic features of Kelvingrove Park to be preserved for future generations of Glaswegians and visitors to enjoy. I hope that the public are inspired to find out more about the magnificent feats of 19th century design and engineering that can be found not only around Kelvingrove but throughout Glasgow."

The work was carried out by Covanburn Contracts and funded by Glasgow City Council and ENV2 contributions with support from Historic Scotland.
