Graham Construction To Revamp Buchanan Street Subway Station

Graham Construction has been awarded a £3m contract to upgrade Buchanan Street Subway Station in Glasgow.

It is the third station modernisation contract to be awarded by the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) to the building firm.

The works at Buchanan Street will be similar to those at previous revamped stations and will provide a brighter, clean and modern environment for passengers.

Included among the improvements for the station are a new modern ticket office, replacing materials on floors, walls and ceilings, new information and signage for passengers, enhancements under the Equalities Act, such as hearing loops, tactile maps, tactile paving and colour contrast flooring; and brighter, more welcoming energy efficient lighting.

In addition, the layout of the station facilities will stay the same, but a new glass canopy will be installed over the entrance near to Nelson Mandela Place. It will be similar to the larger square glass entrance on Buchanan Street.

Gordon Maclennan, Chief Executive of SPT, said: "We are delighted with our progress to date on refurbishing SPT's stations and we aim to continue with our track record of delivering modernisation plans on time and within budget. This will be the sixth of 15 stations to be refurbished and customers have told us they love the new modern design and bright open spaces.

"Glasgow is the second busiest shopping destination in the UK outside London and, once SPT has completed this work, there will be two great Subway stations right at the heart of this stylish city – St Enoch and Buchanan Street."
