Abellio To Upgrade Railway Station

Abellio, the new ScotRail operator, has said it will upgrade Inverness Railway Station as part of its commitment to improve services within the Highland region.

A feasibility study for the project will be completed by end of March 2016, it is understood.

The announcement was made at a meeting of key stakeholders in the future of the area's rail services and included Abellio representatives, rail users, politicians and businesses.

Councillor Thomas Prag, HITRANS Vice-Chairman, said: "HITRANS are delighted to welcome Abellio to the Highlands. We very much look forward to working with them over the next 10 years to maintain the significant growth in rail travel in the Highlands.

"We have worked effectively with the current operators, First Group, in attracting investment to the Highland rail network and I have every confidence we will enjoy the same excellent working relationship with Abellio."

Mr Prag added that the commitment to improve Inverness rail station is a "great boost" for the area.
