A project to illuminate the Auld Brig in Ellon, Aberdeenshire, has been completed.

The lights were switched on at the Grade A listed bridge on earlier this month, to mark the completion of the initiative.

The project was spearheaded by Ellon Community Council, who worked alongside Aberdeenshire Council. Initial funding for the scheme was provided by the local authority, and the success of the project will enable the bridge to be lit every evening.

Councillor Robert Merson, Chair of the Formartine Area Committee, commented: "Funds to release this project came from Aberdeenshire as it was seen as important to encourage people to visit the town centre of Ellon and to highlight this piece of local heritage.

"While Aberdeenshire Council met the cost for purchase and installation of the lighting, Ellon Community Council have agreed to meet the small annual running costs."

Councillor Paul Johnston, Vice Chair of the Formartine Area Committee, added: "It is fantastic to see a community council being so proactive on a matter that they are passionate about. The project is a demonstration of how good working relationships between a community council and the local authority can achieve great things."
