Building work is to commence on the fourth phase of the Bishopbriggs Relief Road project.
Design work has been completed on the scheme and allows for enabling works to start on the latest section this spring, with bridge and carriageway construction following in the autumn.
This phase of works will see the current Westerhill Road replaced and tie in to the third phase of the scheme, at the roundabout on Wester Cleddens Road. A new bridge will be built over the railway line, while a new roundabout will also be delivered.
A scheduled completion date for this phase of work, which will cost round £6.5m, has been given for winter 2017. It is part of a wider 10-year capital project by East Dunbartonshire Council.
Commenting on the initiative, Councillor Alan Moir, Convener of Development and Regeneration, said: "Bishopbriggs Relief Road has been identified as a priority for East Dunbartonshire Council and I am delighted at the progress which has been made.
"Phase four of the road will help to encourage a reduction in vehicles travelling through Bishopbriggs town centre – improving air quality, cutting congestion and increasing economic vitality.
"In addition, Westerhill Business Park is a key area of economic importance in East Dunbartonshire. Providing improved transport links will encourage both inward investment and provide better employment opportunities locally."
He continued: "It's important to emphasise that funding for the project has been provided by the private sector and the Council's capital programme – which is completely separate from the revenue budget, which pays for day-to-day services and is experiencing huge pressures."
