Work has started on the next phase of the Smithton and Culloden Flood Alleviation Scheme.

The project will involve the remediation of sections of watercourse where erosion is evident and subsequently leads to a blockage of downstream culverts. A coarse debris screen will also be installed on the Smithton Burn at Woodlands Park; this will help prevent wood debris and large stones from being washed down stream to the culverts. A new debris screen will be installed at Murray Road as well.

Following a competitive tendering process, the works are being undertaken by Pat Munro (Alness) Ltd. The works started earlier this week and are expected to take around eight weeks to complete.

Welcoming the progression of works, Councillor Thomas Prag, Chair of the Highland Council's Planning, Development and Infrastructure Committee, said: "The Council gave a commitment to do all we could to reduce flood risk in the area and the current site works are key to making the community that bit safer from potential flooding."
