A project to create a new cycle path and footway in Aberdeenshire has commenced.

The work will see the appointed contractor, Hunter Construction, create a 3m-wide shared-use path from Redcliff to Invercarron Cottage.

Work on the scheme will start from today (12 January) and is expected to take a number of weeks to complete. As a result, the existing path on the C27K Bervie Braes will be closed to walkers and cyclists until Friday 20 March. The road also remains closed to vehicular traffic over the winter months.

In addition to the cycle route upgrade, a gate will be installed at the top of the Braes which will allow the road to close when conditions require to do so; while the carriageway surface will also be improved and repaired.

Philip McKay, Head of Roads and Landscape Services, said: "While the need to implement a closure to pedestrian and cyclists is unfortunate, once complete the new shared path will be a substantial improvement.

"As well as providing an improved surface for users it will also allow the small barriers on the north side of the road to be removed."
