Clackmannanshire Council has said it is to install new street lighting in the area. The lights will not only help to save the local authority money, but will maintain and improve safety on paths and roads.

In a statement, the Council said it is investing in a spend-to-save project which will see the current street lights replaced with LED lights over the next five years. Benefits of the scheme include reducing electricity consumption, reducing expenditure on power by up to 60% and reducing the council's maintenance costs.

To date, the first phase of the scheme is underway. Around £750,000 is being invested in Clackmannan and Tullibody, and it is expected that around 90% of street lights in the two communities will be upgraded by April 2015.

Commenting, Councillor Donald Balsillie Enterprise and Environment Convener, said: "The Council is investing in modern, efficient LED, street lighting. The investment will bring long term benefits through reduced costs and maintenance and meet the demand of Scotland's Climate Change Agenda."
