Forestry management work is to be carried out at Den Wood in Hazlehead Park, Aberdeen, next month.
The project will include felling the woods in order to create space for the remaining trees to grow. The council has said timber harvesting machinery will be used to thin the woodland, while forwarders will remove the timber from the woods to the roadside where it will then be collected by lorry.
Before any work is carried out on site, some planning and preparation work needs to be completed. This includes expert surveyors checking trees in the woodland for red squirrel dreys as well as locations where bats could be living. Where this is the case, the trees around them will be left in order to try and protect the species.
Ian Talboys, Countryside Officer, explained: "Den Wood is a great place for wildlife and for people to explore. This work will cause some disturbance in the short term, but will help to sustain this woodland for the future. The work will also support our work to encourage red squirrels back into the city's woodlands."
