Construction work is set to commence on a new community recycling centre in Kelso, the Scottish Borders Council (SBC) has announced.

Work will begin next week to create a new Kelso Community Recycling Centre and a new Neighbourhood Operations depot.

The £1.18m facility will be located at Pinnaclehill Industrial Estate and is expected to be completed by spring 2015.

The project will see the construction of a modern recycling centre which will make it easier for waste materials to be placed into on-site skips. It will also be able to accept various waste types including garden waste and electrical equipment. In addition, an adjacent industrial unit will be transformed to form the neighbourhood operations facility.

SBc Contracts is the appointed contractor for the scheme.

Welcoming the commencement of works, Councillor David Paterson, Executive Member for Environmental Services, said: "It is vital as many households as possible are provided with access to community recycling centres, so it is good news to hear work on the new facility in Kelso it is set to begin.

"The three Kelso Councillors made it clear the town required a community recycling centre and I thank them for their efforts. The introduction of the facility will encourage residents and businesses to recycle as much as possible to support our environment."
