Cycle Route Completed Ahead Of Schedule

Construction News Image
A project to create a new safe cycle route from the Inverness Campus at Beechwood, to Inverness city centre, has been completed.

The route includes the new Inverness Campus, the recently-constructed golden bridge over the A9 in the east, Raigmore housing estate to Millburn Road, and then onto the city centre.

Work started on the cycle route in mid-July, with Coffey Construction Ltd appointed to the scheme. Supervised by the Highland Council and designed by WSP UK, the route has now been completed ahead of schedule.

The work included alterations to the carriageway to create pavements that could be used by both cyclists and pedestrians, new road markings, upgrading crossings to provide Toucan Crossings at two locations on Millburn Road, while new LED street lighting was also installed.

Councillor Drew Hendry, Leader of The Highland Council, welcomed the completion of the project, saying: "This Carbon CLEVER initiative is a clear demonstration of how Highland Council is working towards reducing the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases which are being released into the atmosphere."

Councillor Ian Brown for the Millburn Ward, and Inverness City Leader, added: "I am delighted that the Millburn Road Active Travel route is now completed. This is a key improvement to Inverness' infrastructure that will encourage cycling and walking which is crucial in helping Inverness meet our aim of becoming a carbon neutral city by 2025."

Earlier this year, £250,000 in funding was approved for the Millburn Road Cycle Project by Highland Councillors. Further funding for the £733,000 scheme was made available from a number of sources including the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), HITRANS and Sustrans HIE.
