A number of proposals to improve road and pedestrian safety in Kilmarnock town centre have been unveiled.

The proposals include two key parking locations in the town – mainly the Foregate North car park and the multi-storey car park – and East Ayrshire Council has said they will undergo environmental a series of environmental improvements.

Some £250,000 has been set aside for the Foregate North car park and the project will involve the removal of existing paving and planters; improved pedestrian crossings, walkways and footpaths; tree planting and uplighters; electric vehicle charging points; larger parking bays for motorhomes and the creation of additional motor cycle and cycles stands.

Work on this scheme is expected to commence later this month.

At the multi-storey car park, improvement works are already underway and include barrier reinforcements; cleaning and painting; improved signage and drainage; roof and stairwell waterproofing.

Councillor Jim Buchanan, spokesperson for improving community regeneration, commented: "These improvements will be very welcome, by shoppers and retailers alike. We must do all that we can to encourage people to come into the town centre, and improved car parking provision is a key consideration."
