A housing development for Countesswells in Aberdeen has received planning permission.

Councillors agreed to approve outline planning permission for the 3,000-home development in the area, despite fierce opposition to the proposals. In addition to the properties, two new primary schools, a secondary school, a health centre and business units.

Concerns have been raised about the plans, such as traffic, which is already heavy in the area.

At a planning meeting earlier this week, Marie Boulton, deputy council leader, was not successful in an attempt to throw the plans out.

She said: "I think people weren't listening, they had made their minds up.

"This wasn't about removing the Countesswells site from the development plan, this was about prioritising it, ensuring the infrastructure was in place.

"We've already got gridlock around there."

Ramsey Milne, planning convener, argued that the development is "necessary".

"This is not something that has come out of the blue, it is a long-term planning proposal – it is really necessary that we provide 3,000 homes over the next 15 years for the development of the city," he said.

The Countesswells Consortium project includes developers Heron Property, Ian Suttie and Stewart Milne Homes.
