Construction work is set to begin at Westruther Primary School, the Scottish Borders Council (SBC) has confirmed.

The £370,000 project will see the school extended.

The extension will include:

• A new classroom, entrance and toilet accommodation

• Better teaching and dining facilities for nursery and primary pupils

• Greater opportunities for active learning activities within the school

• Better opportunities for outdoor teaching and learning.

Murray & Burrell have been appointed the contractor for the scheme, while SBC's in-house Architects Section was responsible for the design.

Construction is due to begin on the week commencing Monday 13 October and be completed by April 2015.

Welcoming the start of works on site, Councillor Sandy Aitchison, Executive Member for Education, said: "This is a much needed extension at Westruther Primary School which will be welcomed by pupils, staff and parents.

"Investing in small rural schools ensures equality of experience for rural communities and the appointment of a Borders firm to carry out the works provides a boost to the local economy."
