A warning has been issued by West Dunbartonshire Council after asbestos was found on the site of a former school in Clydebank.

The substance was discovered at the former St Eunan's Primary School by independent contractors who were carrying out routine investigations on the land, the local authority has said.

It is not known where the asbestos has originated from, but investigations are underway.

The discovery has led the council to issue a warning for people to stay away from the site. The land was initially cordoned off following the demolition of the school in 2011, but on a few occasions, the fence has been forced open, while some of the local community tends to use the grounds as a short cut. Warning signs are expected to be installed on the site this week.

Councillor Patrick McGlinchey, Convener of Infrastructure and Regeneration, said: "Our first concern is for public safety and we wanted to let people know of this situation as soon as possible. Signage has been ordered and will be erected immediately. We would ask that people respect this advice and do not access the site.

"The asbestos found on the ground is being removed and the Council is awaiting further detailed reports on this occurrence. We will take all further action as required."
